That's crazy how we're still fighting the same fight today as they were in this movie and the war in Gettysburg, just goes to show you nothings changed..

Hello! My name is Tony, and I ruin movies. Especially the ones I love most. And I am even worse because I studied and now teach History for a living. Let's jump right in- 1) This didn't happen- At all. Like most "Based on historical events" films, Remember the Titans is 98% nonsense that is "Disney-fied" for entertainment purposes. And that's fine! That's why we watch. People don't pay $17 bucks for tickets +14.50 for a coke a box of Goobers for documentaries. But this event in it's entirety did not take place. The team did take a regular tour of the Gettysburg battlefields on the Sunday of camp. But this was done by a regular Gettysburg tour guide who did all of the talking. Boone was known to be a "motivational" speaker who often made long winded speeches to the team, but this was not one of them. 2) So why this scene? The message is still a good one, but it only exists because of the most important false premise of this film- the degree of racial tension. There is no question racial tension has always existed. There are tensions over the issue in 2022, so of course there were some in the 70s. But TC Williams did not integrate in 1971, (the year of the events of this film). The schools integrated in 1965, and then consolidated all students to TC in 71. So there were genuine racial tensions as described in the film, but 6 years earlier. By the championship year, the schools had gone through the "growing pains" of integration. Black and White students were already years in to being in the same school and on the team together. 3) This goes for the rest of the film too- While there were likely still racists on the team, most of the difficulties that happened were just typical disagreements among teenagers. Most of the tension was the derived from the competitive nature of earning a spot on the team. Players hungry for success and to earn starting positions often had heated rivalries but those were again, not race based by this time. The Bus scene for example was not actually to force white and black students on each other, it was to truly separate offense and defense to start creating the spirit of competition. The Emma and Budds characters were also two of the main characters but were not based on real people. They were created to add racial conflict. A great film either way, and full of worthwhile lessons and sentiments. But historically, it is about a D+. But again, it's not TRYING to be accurate, it's trying to be entertaining. Mission accomplished. And yes, I do have too much time on my hands.

May 19 2022, just went to the Gettysburg cemetery . I think I found the spot where they filmed this scene . I think the woods and the creek are scenery for the movie . The grave site scene looks to be closer to the Brick wall in the cemetery . The headstones are rounded and more recent . I found that monument in the background .

That run onto the battlefields of Gettysburg though…That sent chills down my spine. I’ll never forget going there in 1988. 13 years old, seeing the pictures and reading the accounts/letters of teen aged soldiers. Some of them were relatives. Seeing the thousands grave stones was sobering. I don’t recall if we visited all the graves…I think there’s something like over 6k grave markers. I know it’s not just the dead from Gettysburg there. There are a others from wars like The Spanish/American, WWI, plus some wives and children of the fallen. It was a day I will never forget.
